Investigation of blast-induced cerebrospinal fluid cavitation: Insights from a simplified head surrogate

نویسندگان

چکیده

Blast induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) has been a prevalent in recent conflicts. Post-mortem studies have shown damage the tissue close to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) bTBI cases compared non-blast TBI cases. CSF cavitation is potential mechanism for this brain/CSF interface injury. In study, our aim was explore possibility and of blast cavitation. We first developed one-dimensional simplified human head surrogate exposed it nonlethal waves using shock tube. High-speed videography pressure sensors data showed formation collapse simulant. Then, we explored finite element model surrogate. found that transmitting through skull (outer wave) simulants (inner are responsible generation bubbles, respectively. Next, used insight detailed model. The simulations verified role inner outer Our results suggested likely happen under loading. Finally, studied models with different lengths. length significantly affected cavitation, indicating drawback small animals study head. findings can improve understanding after exposure inform design protection systems animal tests.

Experimental and Numerical Investigation of the Mechanism of Blast Wave Transmission Through a Surrogate Head

This work is to develop an experiment-validated numerical model to elucidate the wave transmission mechanisms through a surrogate head under blast loading. Repeated shock tube tests were conducted on a surrogate head, i.e., water-filled polycarbonate shell. Surface strain on the skull simulant and pressure inside the brain simulant were recorded at multiple locations. A numerical model was deve...

A Giant Abdominal Cerebrospinal Fluid Pseudocyst

Background and Aim: Ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) is the most commonly used procedure for treatment of hydrocephalus in children. Abdominal cerebrospinal fluid pseudocyst is a rare complication but potentially fatal. The pathogenesis of this complication remains unclear. This complication should be considered during differential diagnosis of an abdominal mass. Our aim is to report how large ...

Investigation of blast-induced traumatic brain injury

OBJECTIVE Many troops deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan have sustained blast-related, closed-head injuries from being within non-lethal distance of detonated explosive devices. Little is known, however, about the mechanisms associated with blast exposure that give rise to traumatic brain injury (TBI). This study attempts to identify the precise conditions of focused stress wave energy within the...

Blast-induced neurotrauma: surrogate use, loading mechanisms, and cellular responses.

BACKGROUND With the onset of improved protective equipment against fragmentation, blast-induced neurotrauma has emerged as the "signature wound" of the current conflicts in the Middle East. Current research has focused on this phenomenon; however, the exact mechanism of injury and ways to mitigate the ensuing pathophysiology remain largely unknown. The data presented and literature reviewed for...

Investigation of the Flow and Cavitation in a Butterfly Valve

Since knowledge on hydrodynamic torque of a butterfly valve is very important for butterfly valve design, its hydrodynamic torque is investigated in this paper. In reality, the investigation of the loss coefficient and torque from some experiments will take a long time and a lot of money. This paper presents a statistical study of the flow past the butterfly valve in a static analysis using com...
